Introduction
System One Environmental recently supported reclamation work for an oil and gas project located near an active black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colony. Several burrows were identified along the access road and within the work area, requiring thoughtful wildlife management to keep operations moving while protecting sensitive species per local government stipulations.
Challenges
The project required a full passive relocation strategy—an approach that is significantly more complex than standard euthanasia-based practices often used. Our team was tasked with safely excluding prairie dogs from the work area while allowing the colony to remain intact. To accomplish this, System One Environmental designed and installed customized passive relocation devices, including river rock and soil backfill, chicken wire coverings, and one-way exclusion doors that allowed prairie dogs to exit but prevented re-entry. These devices required weekly monitoring to verify structural integrity and ensure relocation was progressing. Since burrowing owls use prairie dog burrows, confirmation of owl presence before work commenced was also necessary.
Solutions
System One Environmental implemented a relocation plan focused on animal safety, operational efficiency, and long-term site stability. Weekly monitoring confirmed that the one-way exclusion devices were functioning and that prairie dog activity steadily declined within the work area. Once relocation was successful, a silt fence barrier was installed around the work zone to prevent recolonization and reduce the likelihood of future conflicts. Continued weekly surveying during the entirety of work operations ensured all devices were operational and animal conflicts did not occur. All relocation and monitoring activities were fully documented, enabling the client to maintain clean environmental records and demonstrate responsible stewardship.
Conclusion
This project highlights System One Environmental’s ability to deliver thoughtful, high-quality wildlife management solutions that protect sensitive species and keep projects on track. By applying practical field expertise and proactive planning, System One Environmental helps clients navigate complex wildlife challenges responsibly and efficiently.
